What You Need to Know About COVID - 19

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that is caused by a new virus called a «coronavirus.» It is also referred to as «novel coronavirus.» It has become a national public health emergency and a global pandemic. The number of cases continues to increase in the United States and around the world.

Symptoms of COVID-19

Common symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. They may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Community

We all play an important role in protecting our communities and families from COVID-19. Take these steps to help slow the spread of the virus:

  • Practice social distancing by keeping 6 feet between you and other people. Avoid hugs, handshakes and large groups.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze by coughing or sneezing into your elbow or a tissue.
  • Stay home when you are sick.

If You Think You Are Sick

Call your primary care doctor. If you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, or think you have been exposed to COVID-19, it is important to be pre-screened prior to seeking testing or treatment. When you call, you will be asked a series of questions about your symptoms, travel history and exposure to COVID-19 to determine if you should be tested for the virus.

Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. Tell the operator that you have or think you might have COVID-19. This will help the responders take additional steps to protect themselves and others.
